A work based on the ancient parable from the Midrash "Vayikra Rabbah," which likens humanity to the occupants of a single ship. Artist Tom Shmueli takes the parable a step further, creating in iron a reflection of the soul – a place where all voices, even those that "drill" within us, seek acceptance and belonging. A powerful sculpture that reminds us that we are all part of one whole, and every small act of goodness affects the entire ship.

A parable to the sons of men who were sitting in a ship.
One of them took a drill and began drilling under it.
His friends said to him, "What are you doing sitting here?"
He said to them - What have I forced upon you? I am not under you, am I a thief?
They told him - that the waters were rising and were flooding the ship.

Been looking at this parable for a while...
And I came up with works that express the idea through a work of art.
And this is one of them.

We can learn more and more through this parable,
And as far as I'm concerned, I'm not running to resolve the situation.
And certainly not pointing an accusing finger at someone who seems to me to be the one "drilling under him"/

But first of all agree to ask myself-
Do I agree to accept that this is how things are? That this is the truth?

And through the question, I actually turn to myself inward, to Tom -
And I see that the ship and all the people in it – everything is within me.
All the voices in the story - including the one who starts drilling under him, and also his shipmates who tell him and explain to him that the water will flood the ship with us...

And when I accept the existence of all these sounds and shades in me,
And that voice in me that starts to bore
It releases something. It's calming.
The child wants to be accepted as he is...

And when I feel accepted, that I am part of this whole and that I am not separate, it allows me to choose a new path. Or allows some kind of ladder to descend from the tree I climbed.
And that new way of thinking can give rise to a new good deed in me, even the smallest of small deeds, which can truly add immense good to the world.
And I am sure that it provides profit and salvation not only to myself but also to all the occupants of the ship.

The source of the parable – Leviticus 4
